Hurricanes at Panthers
The Florida Panthers were in position to make a spirited run toward a postseason berth but have faltered, losing the final three contests (0-2-1) of their four-game road trip. Florida still has an outside shot at a spot but needs to turn it up, beginning with Monday's matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes in the opener of its four-game homestand.
The Panthers, who are coming off a 5-1 setback at Boston on Saturday, trail New Jersey by seven points for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference but have two games in hand with five remaining on their schedule. Jamie McGinn scored the lone goal against the Bruins, giving him seven points in as many contests. Carolina saw its playoff hopes officially end with Saturday's 2-1 home loss to the New York Rangers. Jeff Skinner tallied for the Hurricanes, who will be postseason spectators for the ninth consecutive season and 11th in 12 campaigns since winning the lone Stanley Cup championship in franchise history in 2006.

ABOUT THE HURRICANES (35-33-11): Despite the team's fortunes, Derek Ryan has been shining of late as he carries a four-game point streak into Monday's meeting with Florida. The 31-year-old center has registered a goal and five assists during his run after being kept off the scoresheet in his previous six contests. Defenseman Roland McKeown, who made his NHL debut earlier this season, was recalled from Charlotte of the American Hockey League.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS (39-30-8): Keith Yandle notched an assist Saturday to extend his point streak to five games. The 31-year-old defenseman, who has recorded a goal and five assists during his run, is four points away from matching the career high of 59 he set in 2010-11 with the then-Phoenix Coyotes. Colton Sceviour left Saturday's game in the second period with an undisclosed injury, which he suffered while blocking a shot.
