Bratt, Devils fluster winless Coyotes
NEWARK, N.J. -- Jesper Bratt's power-play goal with 4:13 remaining in the third period was the difference in the New Jersey Devils' 4-3 victory against the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.
Taylor Hall had two goals and Brian Gibbons also scored for the Devils, who received 34 saves from goaltender Cory Schneider in his first start since sustaining a lower-body injury Oct. 19. Bratt also had two assists.
The Coyotes (0-10-1) tied the 1943-44 New York Rangers for the worst start to a season in NHL history.
Christian Fischer, Brendan Perlini and Clayton Keller scored for the Coyotes. Goaltender Louis Domingue made 21 saves.
Fischer's power-play goal 10:37 into the first period gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. Christian Dvorak's shot was denied by Schneider, but the rebound kicked to a driving Fischer for his third goal of the season.
Gibbons scored on a penalty shot to even the score 1:18 later while the Devils were short-handed. He faked a slap shot, moved around Domingue and stashed a backhand into the vacated net to make it 1-1.
Hall and Perlini exchanged goals 48 seconds apart midway through the second period.
Hall's goal at 11:09 that put the Devils on top 2-1 was the result of a giveaway by Coyotes defenseman Kevin Connauton behind the net to Bratt, who found Hall in front for his second goal of the season.
Perlini answered after some sloppy play by the Devils in their zone, as he took a pass from defenseman Alex Goligoski and snapped a wrist shot past Schneider.
Keller's rookie-leading eighth goal with 4:47 remaining in the period put the Coyotes in front 3-2. Keller picked the pocket of top overall pick Nico Hischier, took off on a short breakaway and beat Schneider for the go-ahead goal.
Hall's power-play goal 4:30 into third period tied the game at 3. Adam Henrique made a spinning backhand pass to the left side and Hall buried a wrist shot short side over Domingue's glove.
