Draisaitl sends Oilers past Devils in OT
NEWARK, N.J. -- Leon Draisaitl capped an exciting overtime by burying a gorgeous feed from Connor McDavid with 17 seconds remaining for the game-deciding goal to lift the Edmonton Oilers over the New Jersey Devils 3-2 Thursday at the Prudential Center.
The victory marked the first time this season the Oilers won consecutive games and first time in six tries they won when trailing after two periods.
Milan Lucic had a goal and an assist and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded a pair of assists for the Oilers (6-8-1). Edmonton received a 32-save outing from Cam Talbot.
Cory Schneider made 29 saves for the Devils, who have lost four games in a row.
Brian Boyle scored his first goal since being diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer two months ago for New Jersey (9-4-2).
Boyle gave the Devils a 1-0 lead 5:33 into the contest, cashing in on a rebound which led to an emotional celebration that included a few tears from the 6-foot-6 center.
The lead held up until 6:50 of the second when Edmonton's Anton Slepyshev beat Schneider with a left-wing shot for his first of the season.
Drew Stafford restored the Devils' one-goal advantage by scoring his fifth goal off a power move to the net and slick finish past Talbot at 18:25 of the second period.
The Oilers answered back at 3:21 of the third when Lucic's shot off the rush beat Schneider between the pads, tying the game, 2-2.
New Jersey nearly regained the lead with under seven minutes to play in regulation when Blake Coleman's snap shot hit the crossbar.
