Red Wings beat homeward-bound Isles
NEW YORK -- Trevor Daley scored the tiebreaking goal with 9:57 left in the third period Tuesday night for the Detroit Red Wings, who beat the New York Islanders 6-3 at Barclays Center.
Mike Green scored with 5:48 remaining for the Red Wings, who won despite being outshot 37-22. Luke Glendening added an empty-netter with 28.1 seconds left.
Martin Frk, Gustav Nyquist and Anthony Mantha also scored as the Red Wings (13-13-7) won their second straight. Goalie Petr Mrazek, making his first start since Dec. 2, recorded 34 saves.
Anders Lee, Ryan Pulock and Josh Bailey scored for the Islanders (18-13-3), who lost hours after Newsday reported the franchise's owners won a bid to build a new arena in Nassau County, where the club was based from its inception in 1972 until moving to Brooklyn in 2015. A press conference announcing the news is scheduled for Wednesday.
Goalie Thomas Greiss made 16 saves.
Lee gave the Islanders the lead 6:32 into the first before Frk tied the game 3:01 later. The Red Wings took the lead with 3:11 remaining in the first on Nyquist's power-play goal, which was set up when Henrik Zetterberg's pass found a path to Nyquist between Scott Mayfield and Cal Clutterbuck.
The Islanders outshot the Red Wings 23-4 in the second but could not carry the lead into the intermission.
Pulock tied the game at the 2:03 mark of the second, when his shot from just inside the right faceoff circle sailed past Mrazek, who was shielded by a leaping Steve Bernier.
Bailey, who was named the third star of the week Monday, put the Islanders ahead following a sensational pass by Mathew Barzal, who sent a no-look pass into a crowded crease. Bailey worked his way through a trio of Red Wings to score the power play goal with 7:01 remaining.
The Red Wings maximized their best scoring chance of the period with 4:45 left, when Mantha tied the game by putting back the puck after Zetterberg missed a backhanded shot into an open corner of the net.
