BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Defenseman Hampus Lindholm scored a hat trick to help the Anaheim Ducks to a 5-4 overtime win over the New York Islanders on Thursday night at Barclays Center.
Lindholm netted the winner with 57 seconds left in overtime after right winger Rickard Rakell forced the extra session with the tying goal with 1:13 left in the third period as the Ducks (15-13-8) snapped a three-game losing streak (0-2-1).
Center John Tavares scored twice for the Islanders, who fell to 3-6-2 in December with their fourth loss in their last five games.
The Ducks scored twice on their first four shots in a span of 1:45 in the middle of the first period to take a 2-0 lead on goals by Lindholm and right winger Ondrej Kase.
New York (18-13-4) cut its deficit in half at 5:39 of the second period as rookie forward Matt Barzal scored his ninth of the season off a nice feed from center Josh Bailey from the right circle on a five-on-three power play.
Lindholm scored his second goal of the game, and fifth of the season, on a slap shot from the high slot after a clean faceoff win by center Ryan Getzlaf to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead at 12:46 of the second period.
Tavares responded with his 20th goal of the season, tapping in the rebound of a saved Bailey shot at 16:59 of the second to pull New York within 3-2 on their second power play goal of the night.
Tavares tied the score at 3 with his second goal of the game, receiving a sensational pass from Bailey at the blue line and slipping a low shot past Anaheim goaltender Ryan Miller at 5:44 of the third period.
A little more than two minutes later, Ladd gave the Islanders their first lead as the winger jumped on a loose puck and scored his ninth goal of the season from between the circles to put New York up 4-3 at 7:52.
With Miller pulled for an extra skater, Rakell tied the score at 4 for the Ducks with 1:15 left in regulation, batting in the rebound of a shot by defenseman Brandon Montour from the point for his ninth goal of the season.
