Matvei Michkov's OT goal caps Flyers' rally vs. Rangers

Matvei Michkov scored twice, including the overtime winner, as the visiting Philadelphia Flyers battled back to edge the New York Rangers 3-2 on Thursday night.

Michkov skated around J.T. Miller and snapped a shot five-hole past Igor Shesterkin at 2:10 of the extra frame for his 15th of the season.

Trevor Zegras scored the other goal for the Flyers, who trailed 2-0 midway through the game.

Samuel Ersson made 23 saves as Philadelphia won for just the fourth time in its past 11 games (4-4-3).

Sam Carrick and Alexis Lafreniere had the goals for the Rangers, who have dropped five straight (0-4-1) and are 2-11-2 since their Winter Classic victory over the Florida Panthers on Jan. 2.

Shesterkin, who missed 13 games with a lower-body injury, made his return to the Rangers crease and stopped 21 shots in the loss.

The Flyers got on the board at 10:25 of the middle frame on a power play as Michkov one-timed a cross-ice pass from Noah Cates.

Zegras tied it 39 seconds into the third, snapping a shot high blocker side past Shesterkin.

New York controlled much of the first-period play, outshooting Philadelphia 9-5 and leading 1-0 after 20 minutes.

The Rangers opened the scoring at 9:56 when Carrick put a loose puck on goal from the top of the faceoff circle, a shot that appeared to catch Ersson off guard.

Lafreniere doubled New York's lead at 1:23 of the second period, one-timing a Will Cuylle feed past Ersson.

Thursday was the third of four meetings between the Flyers and Rangers. New York edged Philadelphia 5-4 in a shootout on Dec. 20 before doubling up the Flyers 6-3 on Jan. 17.

The Metropolitan Division rivals wrap up the season series on March 9 in Philadelphia.
