Dougie Hamilton, Jack Hughes fuel Devils' comeback over Blackhawks

Dougie Hamilton and Jack Hughes scored 19 seconds apart late in the third period to help the New Jersey Devils rally for a 5-3 win against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday evening in Newark, N.J.

Hamilton tied it 3-3 with a wrist shot into the far side of the net from the right faceoff circle at 14:32, and Hughes scored on a breakaway down the right side at 14:51 to give the Devils a 4-3 lead.

Hughes scored into an empty net with 31 seconds left to give him two goals and two assists.

Connor Brown and Simon Nemec added goals, and Jake Allen made 28 saves for the Devils (38-33-2, 78 points), who have won six of eight.

Frank Nazar scored two goals, Ilya Mikheyev also scored and Spencer Knight made 35 saves for the Blackhawks (27-34-13, 67 points), who have lost five of six.

Chicago took advantage of a miscue by Allen to score the first goal of the game.

The puck was dumped into the New Jersey zone and Allen went behind his net to stop it, but then couldn't find it at his skates. Anton Frondell skated in and stole the puck before passing it out front to Mikheyev, who swept it into the wide-open net for a 1-0 lead at 4:19 of the first period.

The Devils were on the first power play of the game when Brown tipped in a shot from Luke Hughes to tie it 1-1 at 11:15.

Chicago retook the lead at 13:11 of the first period after Ryan Donato won a battle for the puck against New Jersey forward Nick Bjugstad behind the Devils net before passing it out front to Nazar for the one-timer and a 2-1 lead.

At 15:48 of the second period, Dawson Mercer made a backhand pass from behind the Chicago net to Nemec for a one-timer from above the right hash marks to tie it 2-2.

Nazar scored with a one-timer from the left faceoff circle with three seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Blackhawks a 3-2 lead at 10:51 of the third period.
