Flames 9, Avalanche 1

Olli Jokinen recorded a goal and three assists in the first period and David Moss had a goal and four points as the Calgary Flames walloped the Colorado Avalanche 9-1 Monday, handing them their eighth straight loss mere hours after forward Peter Forsberg called it a career.

Curtis Glencross tallied twice to extend his goal-scoring streak to five games and added an assist for the Flames, who posted their ninth win in 12 games and improved to 6-1-2 in their last nine on the road. Captain Jarome Iginla stretched his point streak to six contests with two goals while defenseman Anton Babchuk, Alex Tanguay and Matt Stajan also scored.

Forsberg announced his retirement Monday afternoon after registering a minus-4 rating without recording a point in his two-game comeback. The surprising news apparently had a negative effect on Colorado, which fell behind 18 seconds into the contest and trailed 5-0 after 20 minutes.

Moss began the onslaught with his 13th goal and Jokinen completed the first-period uprising with 2:59 remaining. The four-point effort by Jokinen, who sat out the third period after being kneed by Philippe Dupuis at the end of the first, gave him 10 points in his last five games.

Daniel Winnik scored a power-play goal for the Avalanche, who have dropped four straight at home and 10 of 11 overall.
