Coyotes 3, Capitals 2
Ray Whitney scored a power-play goal late in the second period to snap a tie and lead the Phoenix Coyotes to their fifth consecutive win, a 3-2 home triumph over the Washington Capitals on Monday.
Martin Hanzal and Vernon Fiddler also tallied, Radim Vrbata notched two assists and Ilya Bryzgalov made 29 saves for the Coyotes, who also have captured four straight at home.
Whitney, who also had an assist, received a pass from Vrbata in the high slot and rifled it past Michal Neuvirth with 2:17 remaining in the second for a 2-1 lead. The goal was Whitney's seventh point in four contests and ended his 12-game drought.
Fiddler created some breathing room less than 4 1/2 minutes into the third with his sixth tally of the season.
Marcus Johansson and Matt Bradley scored while Neuvirth stopped 15 shots for the Capitals, who began their five-game road trip with their third straight loss. Washington has scored more than three goals only four times in its last 31 contests.
