Flyers 4, Lightning 3 (SO)
Defenseman Kimmo Timonen scored in the seventh round of the shootout and Brian Boucher made it stand up by denying Martin St. Louis as the visiting Philadelphia Flyers skated to a 4-3 triumph over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday in a battle of two Eastern Conference powers.
James van Riemsdyk collected a goal and an assist, Darroll Powe converted a penalty shot and Scott Hartnell also tallied for Atlantic Division-leading Philadelphia (37-14-5), which has won four of its last five overall and seven of its last nine on the road.
Boucher finished with 24 saves to improve to 7-2-0 since the turn of the new year. The 34-year-old Rhode Island native denied six of seven attempts - including five in a row - in the shootout to preserve the victory.
Philadelphia extended its lead to 3-1 after Powe converted a penalty shot at 8:48 of the second period. The former Princeton star, who was hooked by Steven Stamkos to prevent a clean breakaway, made good on the subsequent penalty shot by wristing the puck just under the crossbar for his fifth goal of the season.
Tampa Bay leveled the contest at 3-3 after tallying twice in a 53-second span in the second period. Captain Vincent Lecavalier netted his fifth goal in four games and Teddy Purcell also beat Boucher for the honors.
Dominic Moore also tallied and Dwayne Roloson turned aside 26 shots for Southeast Division-leading Tampa Bay (34-17-6), which failed in its bid for a four-game regular-season sweep of the Flyers.
