Al Montoya made 35 saves in his first start in nearly two years to carry the New York Islanders to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Kings on Saturday night.
Matt Moulson scored twice and Frans Nielsen added a shorthanded goal for the Islanders, who sent the Kings to their first regulation defeat in the past 12 games (8-1-3).
Making his fifth career start and first since April 2009, Montoya turned aside 28 shots in the final two periods to earn his second career shutout. His first came in his NHL debut on April 1, 2009.
Nielsen put New York ahead at 5:01 of the first period. It marked the ninth shorthanded goal of the season for the Islanders, tying them for second in the league with the New York Rangers.
Moulson scored once in the second period and again in the third to put the game out of reach. John Tavares and P.A. Parenteau assisted on both tallies.
Jonathan Quick made 20 saves to fall to 7-1-1 in his last nine for Los Angeles.
