Rookie Marcus Johansson snapped a tie midway through the third period with a power-play goal and Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves to pace the visiting Washington Capitals to a 2-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres on Sunday.
Mathieu Perreault chipped in a goal and added an assist for the Capitals, who extended Buffalo’s losing skid to three games.
Johansson redirected Perreault’s shot in front of the net at the 10:20 mark of the third period for his ninth of the season break the 1-1 deadlock.
Washington opened the scoring at 6:09 of the second period when Matt Hendricks' dump-in took a wild bounce off the boards and came right to Perreault, who snapped his seventh of the season past defending Vezina Trophy winner Ryan Miller.
Jason Pominville answered while Buffalo was on the power play less than three minutes later with a slap shot from the slot for his 14th of the season.
Miller made 39 saves.
