Hurricanes 4, Penguins 1

Cam Ward made 33 saves and Erik Cole and Jussi Jokinen each had a goal and an assist as the host Carolina Hurricanes cruised past the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 Friday night.

Jay Harrison and Joe Corvo added goals and Derek Joslin chipped in a pair of assists as the Hurricanes ended a two-game losing skid.

Pascal Dupuis had the lone goal for the Penguins, who are 0-2-2 in their last four games while scoring just six goals in that span.

Both teams' newcomers had relatively quiet nights. Pens forward Alex Kovalev had zero points and didn't register a shot in his first game since returning to Pittsburgh in a trade with the Ottawa Senators. Forward Cory Stillman, in his second go-around with Carolina, also had no points but finished a plus-2.

The news wasn't all good for Carolina, which lost team leader Eric Staal after he was hit by Pittsburgh defenseman Matt Niskanen. Staal left with what was called an upper-body injury, and he has been ruled out of Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens.
