Stars 3, Coyotes 2

Jamie Benn scored on the power play with five seconds left to lift the visiting Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday.

Tom Wandell and Jamie Langenbrunner added goals and Kari Lehtonen made 27 saves for the Stars, who pulled within two points of the Coyotes for second place in the Pacific Division and moved into a tie for sixth place in the Western Conference.

Phoenix climbed out of a 2-0 hole with a pair of goals late in the third period, knotting it at 2-2 when Ray Whitney sent a slap shot in for his 12th goal with 38 seconds left in regulation.

But the Coyotes were called for four penalties in the final 13 seconds, with the first leading to the 5-on-4 opportunity that the Stars converted. Loui Eriksson sent a past into the slot, where Benn wristed a shot past Ilya Bryzgalov low on the glove side.

Phoenix was called for a pair of misconducts and an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty seconds later.

Wandell got the Stars on the board with less than two minutes left in the first period and it stayed 1-0 until the 12:47 mark of the third period, when Langenbrunner tipped in Steve Ott’s shot for his eighth tally of the season.
