Islanders 5, Blues 2
Defenseman Andrew MacDonald scored twice in his 100th NHL game and John Tavares had a highlight-reel goal as the New York Islanders defeated the struggling St. Louis Blues 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
PA Parenteau and Michael Grabner also scored for the Islanders (25-32-9). Tavares, Parenteau and Grabner had assists.
New York's Al Montoya made 21 saves, and is 5-2-1 with a 1.94 goals against average and .935 save percentage in nine games since he was acquired from Phoenix on Feb. 9.
Andy McDonald and Chris Stewart scored in the third period for the Blues (28-28-9), who have lost four straight. Stewart has 20 goals, including seven in nine games with St. Louis.
Tavares gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 9:12 of the first period. After he took a nifty feed from Parenteau, Tavares deked around two Blues and beat Ben Bishop with a backhander high to his glove side.
MacDonald, who has three of his four goals this season in the last two games, scored on a slap shot in the second period and on a breakaway in the third. He also hit the post later in the third period.
Grabner's 26 goals lead NHL rookies.
