Coyotes 5, Red Wings 4 (SO)

Martin Hanzal tied the game with 1:57 remaining in the third period and Radim Vrbata scored the only goal of the shootout as the Phoenix Coyotes ended their five-game losing streak with a 5-4 comeback victory over the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Kyle Turris recorded a goal and an assist, Mikkel Boedker and Ray Whitney also scored and Ilya Bryzgalov made 22 saves for the Coyotes, who have won six of their last seven home games. Phoenix concluded its season series against Detroit with a 2-0-2 record.

Darren Helm notched a shorthanded goal and an assist, Drew Miller, Valtteri Filppula and Johan Franzen added tallies and Jimmy Howard stopped 32 shots for the Red Wings, who finished a 2-1-2 road trip with their third straight loss.

Trailing 4-1 after 40 minutes, Phoenix rallied to forge a tie as Hanzal capped the third-period outburst by banging in a rebound for his 16th goal of the season. After a scoreless overtime, Vrbata beat Howard with a backhander in the second round of the shootout, giving the Coyotes their first win since Feb. 22 at Philadelphia.

Detroit took a 2-0 lead as Miller beat Bryzgalov with a weak shot from the blue line 2:04 into the game and Franzen scored with three minutes left in the opening period. It was Franzen's first tally since a five-goal effort against Ottawa on Feb. 2, ending his 14-game goalless drought.
