Hurricanes 4, Islanders 2

Defenseman Joe Corvo recorded a goal and two assists as the visiting Carolina Hurricanes rallied for a 4-2 triumph over the New York Islanders on Saturday night.

Corvo scored his first goal since Feb. 25 at 3:02 of the third period on a deflection to tie the game at 2-2.

The blue-liner also assisted on Erik Cole’s tally at 6:04 to put Carolina (38-30-10) ahead for good. Cole chipped captain Eric Staal's feed past Islanders goaltender Al Montoya. Staal sealed it with an empty-net, shorthanded goal with 47.6 seconds left for the Hurricanes, who moved within one point of the eighth-place New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference. Both teams have four games remaining.

Cam Ward made 29 saves for Carolina, which has won six of seven games.

John Tavares netted his 28th goal of the season and Jesse Joensuu also tallied for the Islanders (30-37-12), who have lost six straight games to the Hurricanes - including all four this season.

Jussi Jokinen scored his second goal in three games to give Carolina the lead 4:47 into the game, knocking home a Corvo pass. Joensuu tied the game exactly four minutes later with a wrist shot.

Tavares put New York ahead 2-1 by deflecting a Matt Moulson shot past Ward at 7:05 of the second period.
