Sharks 3, Kings 2 (OT)
Joe Pavelski scored 14:44 into overtime as the San Jose Sharks recorded a 3-2 home triumph over the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday in Game 1 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series.
Dany Heatley scored 28 seconds into the contest, rookie Logan Couture also tallied and Ryan Clowe notched three assists for Pacific Division champion San Jose.
Last year's Stanley Cup-winning netminder, Antti Niemi turned aside 33 shots to preserve the win.
In overtime, Clowe skated up the wing before finding Pavelski in the slot. Pavelski quickly wired a shot past Jonathan Quick to end the contest.
After Heatley scored the fastest goal in San Jose postseason history, captain Dustin Brown leveled the contest 7:25 into the second period after making Couture pay for missing the net on an odd-man advantage. Justin Williams and Brown raced up the ice and converted a 2-on-1 breakaway.
Couture atoned for his earlier mistake nearly three minutes later after wristing a shot past Quick and just inside the goal post. Williams knotted it up again nearly six minutes later by cleaning up a loose puck on the doorstep.
Quick finished with 42 saves for the Kings, who will look to rebound on Saturday in Game 2 of the series.
