Red Wings 5, Senators 3

Rookie Cory Emmerton scored a goal and set up another as the Detroit Red Wings spoiled the coaching debut of former assistant Paul MacLean with a 5-3 home triumph over the Ottawa Senators on Friday.

Todd Bertuzzi recorded his 290th career goal and seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom and Jiri Hudler also scored as the Red Wings improved to 6-2-0 in their last eight home openers.

With Detroit nursing a 2-0 advantage, the 23-year-old Emmerton wristed a shot past Craig Anderson and set up defenseman Ian White in the third period to give the Red Wings a five-goal cushion.

The offensive explosion was more than enough for Jimmy Howard, who turned aside 29 shots to improve to 3-0-0 in his career against the Senators.

Milan Michalek scored twice in just over 2 1/2 minutes and defenseman Filip Kuba netted a power-play goal for Ottawa, which was the second-lowest scoring team in the NHL last season.

Anderson finished with 34 saves.
