Avalanche 1, Bruins 0
Milan Hejduk scored the lone goal and Semyon Varlamov made 30 saves in his first shutout as the visiting Colorado Avalanche blanked the Boston Bruins 1-0 on Monday afternoon.
Bruins coach Claude Julien was denied his 300th NHL victory.
After winning a faceoff in the Bruins zone, Jan Hejda collected the puck on the left point and sent it to Hejduk along the boards. Hejduk worked it back to the faceoff circle, switching from the back hand and whipping a wrister past Tuukka Rask at the 7:57 mark of the third period.
Boston created a slew of scoring opportunities to no avail in the second, getting thwarted on back-to-back breakaway chances by Varlamov midway through the period.
Varlamov saved his best for late in the third, when he sprawled out in the crease to stop a wrist shot from Milan Lucic streaking toward the goal. It was the fifth shutout of Varlamov’s career.
Rask made 35 saves for the Bruins, who have started their Stanley Cup defense with losses in two of their first three games.
