Capitals 6, Lightning 5 (SO)

Matt Hendricks and Alexander Semin scored the only goals in the shootout as the Washington Capitals defeated the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning 6-5 on Monday night.

Jason Chimera scored twice for the Capitals (2-0-0), the second tying the game with 2:44 remaining. His first goal was the 100th of his career.

Tomas Vokoun shook off a rough night to make two saves in the shootout in his Capitals’ debut. Washington also killed off two short Lightning power plays in overtime.

Defenseman Brett Clark scored from behind the goal line, banking it in off Vokoun’s pad with 7:04 left to give the Lightning a 5-4 lead. Clark also assisted on Nate Thompson’s goal that tied it 4-4 at 7:42 into the third period.

Marcus Johansson, a healthy scratch in Washington’s opener, had a goal and an assist.

The Lightning (1-1-1) killed all seven Washington power plays, including one in overtime, improving to 18-for-18 on the season.

Nineteen-year-old Brett Connolly gained his first career point on an assist in the second period for the Lightning. Defenseman Bruno Gervais, making his Tampa Bay debut, had a goal and an assist in the first period.
