Kings 3, Flyers 2 (OT)
Defenseman Jack Johnson scored 1:39 into overtime and Mike Richards picked up the primary assist on the game-winner in his return to Philadelphia as the Los Angeles Kings handed the Flyers their first loss of the season with a 3-2 triumph on Saturday.
Justin Williams scored twice, fellow former Flyer Simon Gagne notched an assist and Jonathan Quick stopped 32 shots for Los Angeles, which saw stud defenseman Drew Doughty suffer an upper-body injury after a hit from Zac Rinaldo in the first period.
During a stoppage in the first period, Richards' picture was displayed on the Jumbotron with a tribute from his former club. The sellout crowd at the Wells Fargo Center gave him a standing ovation - although there were a smattering of boos mixed in. The negative response, however, seemed to pick up as the game went on.
Richards' hooking penalty in the third period led to defenseman Matt Carle's tying goal with 6:31 remaining.
He made up for it in overtime, however. With James van Riemsdyk serving a tripping penalty, Richards fed Johnson, who tucked the puck past Ilya Bryzgalov for his second goal of the season.
Danny Briere netted a power-play goal and Bryzgalov turned aside 23 shots to fall to 14-6-4 in his career versus Los Angeles.
