Sabres 3, Penguins 2
Nathan Gerbe and Luke Adam had a goal and an assist apiece to help the Buffalo Sabres fend off the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Saturday night.
Drew Stafford added a third-period goal and Christian Ehrhoff notched a pair of assists as the Sabres (3-1-0) snapped a six-game losing skid against Pittsburgh.
Jhonas Enroth, making his first start of the season in place of Ryan Miller, stopped 30 of 32 shots.
James Neal scored his fifth goal for the Penguins (3-1-2), who suffered their first loss in regulation. Jordan Staal also tallied.
The Sabres opened a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals less than five minutes apart in the first period.
Adam’s initial shot was rebuffed by Marc-Andre Fleury before Gerbe recovered the rebound and used a backhand to finish with Fleury out of position. Minutes later, Vanek got behind the defense and fed Adam for a snap shot from the doorstep for his third goal of the season.
Neal got the Penguins on the board 2:11 into the second frame. After Stafford made it 3-1 midway through the third, Staal pulled the Penguins within a goal with 4:51 remaining.
Fleury finished with 25 saves in the loss.
