Hurricanes 4, Bruins 1
Joni Pitkanen recorded a goal and an assist, and Eric Staal scored on the power play as the Carolina Hurricanes took advantage of a slew of penalties en route to a 4-1 victory over the host Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
Anthony Stewart and Tuomo Ruutu each added a tally for the Hurricanes, who were at a 5-on-3 advantage for much of the third period.
The fans began to throw trash on the ice at 12:10 of the third period after Dennis Seidenberg was hit with a boarding penalty, the Bruins’ 16th penalty up to that point. Nathan Horton, Brad Marchand, Milan Lucic and coach Claude Julien were all given game misconduct penalties in the third, ending their nights.
Frustrated Boston fell to 2-4-0.
Cam Ward was a star amidst the scrum for Carolina with 33 saves.
Pitkanen’s second-period tally turned out to be the game-winner. The Finnish winger accepted a pass in his own zone and skated through the neutral zone before blasting a slap shot past Tuukka Rask from above the left face-off circle. Tim Brent hit Pitkanen with the pass as he was falling to the ice.
The Bruins’ frustrations started in the second period when Horton got into it with a pair of Carolina players. Captain Zdeno Chara came over to help and was hit with fighting, instigating and game misconduct penalties, putting him in the box for most of the third period.
