Rangers 4, Canucks 0

Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 40 shots as the New York Rangers earned their first victory of the season, prevailing 4-0 over the host Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday.

After a scoreless 40 minutes in which Vancouver dominated play, it was New York that broke the deadlock 2:22 into the third period. Mike Rupp wristed a rebound of a Michael Del Zotto shot past Roberto Luongo on the blocker side for his first goal in eight career games against the Canucks.

New York doubled the advantage at the midway point of the third, with Ryan McDonough completing a give-and-go with Brandon Dubinsky by slapping the puck past Luongo from between the circles.

Brian Boyle's wrist shot past Luongo's outstretched blocker at 11:30 made it 3-0, and Marian Gaborik competed the scoring with a tap-in with just over two minutes left.

Lundqvist made it stand up with a dizzying array of great saves as the Canucks pelted him with shots all game long. It was his 36th career shutout and his second straight against Vancouver, which went 0-for-8 with the man advantage.

The Canucks played a moving video tribute to late forward Rick Rypien prior to the game. Rypien, who formerly played for Vancouver, was found dead in his Alberta home during the offseason.
