Blue Jackets 4, Red Wings 1
Ryan Johansen and John Moore each scored their first career goals as the Columbus Blue Jackets became the last NHL team to win a game with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
Steve Mason turned aside 30 shots as the Blue Jackets (1-7-1) avoided becoming the first team to open a season with nine straight losses since Pittsburgh went 0-4-5 in 2005-06.
R.J. Umberger scored 21 seconds into the game and Derek MacKenzie added an empty-net tally for Columbus, which snapped a 14-game losing streak dating to last season and avenged a 5-2 defeat at Detroit on Friday.
Mason was injured and went to the locker room after Darren Helm scored for Detroit at 4:54 of the first, but returned less than three minutes later and snapped a personal 11-game losing streak.
Johansen, who assisted on Umberger's goal, gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead at 8:56 of the first by knocking a shot off the back of Wings netminder Ty Conklin.
Columbus defenseman James Wisniewski logged a team-high 27:21 of ice time in his season debut after serving an eight-game suspension for an illegal check in the preseason.
