Maple Leafs 4, Rangers 2
Jonas Gustavsson stopped 28 shots in relief of the injured James Reimer and the Toronto Maple Leafs rode three third-period goals to a 4-2 win over New York on Thursday night, spoiling the Rangers' home opener.
The Swedish netminder was solid for Toronto, which placed Reimer on injured reserve earlier Thursday with concussion symptoms. He isn't eligible to return to the lineup until Monday.
After the teams played to a 1-1 draw through 40 minutes, Joffrey Lupul put Toronto ahead for the first time 2:11 into the third period, popping a rebound of a Jake Gardiner shot up and over fallen Rangers netminder Henrik Lundqvist. Clarke MacArthur padded the lead with a wicked slapshot from the top of the right circle that beat Lundqvist past his left skate at 6:33.
Mike Brown completed the third-period barrage with a wrist shot from the right side that beat Lundqvist on the glove side for his first goal of the season at 13:54.
Michael Del Zotto rounded out the scoring for the Rangers with 4:34 remaining, flicking a shot from just inside the blue line that deflected off the stick of Toronto's Tim Connolly and past Gustavsson.
The Rangers opened the scoring 6:23 into the opening period. Gustavsson stopped Marian Gaborik from in close before guiding the puck out to the top of the left circle, where Dan Girardi slapped it through Gustavsson's pads.
Matthew Lombardi drew Toronto even 1:20 into the middle period, taking a Tyler Bozak feed and wristing a shot that squeezed in underneath Lundqvist's right arm.
