Coyotes 5, Devils 3

Ray Whitney scored two goals and set up another as the Phoenix Coyotes recorded a 5-3 comeback victory over the visiting New Jersey Devils on Thursday.

Martin Hanzal notched a tally and an assist while Patrick O'Sullivan and Raffi Torres also scored for Phoenix, which has won just two of its last seven home games dating to last season.

Whitney forged a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal midway through the second period and set up Hanzal with 7:44 remaining in the third for a 4-2 advantage. Just 2:09 later, Whitney converted a pass from Hanzal during a 2-on-1 to give the Coyotes a three-goal cushion.

Captain Zach Parise tallied in the first period and defenseman Mark Fayne tipped a shot by Mattias Tedenby past Mike Smith 5 1/2 minutes into the second to give New Jersey a 2-1 edge.

Nick Palmieri also scored and Johan Hedberg made 37 saves for the Devils, who have lost six of their last eight visits to Phoenix.
