Red Wings 3, Oilers 0
Jimmy Howard turned aside 24 shots for his third shutout of the season to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-0 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oilers on Friday night.
Defensemen Drew Miller and Niklas Kronwall scored goals for the Red Wings, who won their third straight game after having dropped six in a row.
Valtteri Filppula also tallied for Detroit, which has allowed only two goals during its winning streak. It was the second shutout in three games and eighth career for Howard.
Nikolai Khabibulin made 27 saves as the Oilers lost for the second straight night and fell to 2-3-0 on their current six-game road trip. He had his six-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time in regulation this season.
The Red Wings opened the scoring at 10:35 of the first period. Edmonton's Tom Gilbert shoveled a lazy pass around the boards that went right to Patrick Eaves. He threw a shot toward that net that caromed off Gilbert onto an onrushing Miller, who whipped it past Khabibulin for his first goal of the season.
Kromwall doubled the advantage 2:05 into the second, collecting a loose puck and hammering a hard slapper past Khabibulin.
