Senators 5, Oilers 2
Rookies Colin Greening and Kaspars Daugavins scored nine seconds apart in the first period, setting the tone in the Ottawa Senators' 5-2 rout of the host Edmonton Oilers on Thursday.
Five different Ottawa players had goals as the Senators improved to 2-0-0 on their three-game jaunt through Western Canada. The loss marked just the second regulation defeat for the Oilers in nine home games.
The Senators chased Oilers goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin with three first-period goals that effectively put the game away. Moments after Greening opened the scoring, the Senators won the center-ice faceoff and Daugavins raced in on the left wing before firing a shot to the far corner past Khabibulin.
Milan Michalek extended the lead in the final minute of the period, whistling a wrist shot off the face off that fooled Khabibulin for his 12th goal of the season.
After Edmonton rookie Anton Lander cut into the deficit with a shorthanded goal 2:14 into the second period, Jesse Winchester restored Ottawa's three-goal advantage by beating Devan Dubnyk up high on a breakaway at 7:44.
Ottawa's Zenon Konopka added to the barrage 3:17 into the third, sliding a backhander along the ice that eluded Dubnyk.
Ryan Jones completed the scoring with under a minute remaining, tipping home an Eric Belanger shot with Edmonton on a power play.
