Stars 4, Oilers 1
Kari Lehtonen turned aside 17 shots as the Dallas Stars ended a five-game losing skid with a convincing 4-1 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.
Lehtonen was the beneficiary of a rare offensive outburst from the Stars, who had scored just four times over the course of their losing streak.
Toby Peterson opened the scoring 8:30 into the opening period, taking a centering pass from Tom Wandell and wristing a knuckler past Edmonton netminder Nikolai Khabibulin.
Steve Ott extended the lead near the midway point of the second period. Moments after Edmonton's Ryan Smyth missed a wraparound into a wide-open net, Mike Ribeiro fed a backhand centering pass that Ott one-timed past Khabibulin from point-blank range.
Oilers rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins trimmed the deficit with his eighth goal of the season at 15:24 but Stars forward Michael Ryder needed just 50 seconds to restore the two-goal edge, completing a 3-on-1 break with a wrist shot that found the top left corner.
Edmonton was given a pair of power-play chances in the final five minutes but couldn't convert, finishing 0-for-6 with the man advantage on the night.
Radek Dvorak iced things with a shorthanded empty-net goal with 1:24 remaining, his first of the campaign.
Edmonton has dropped five of its last six games.
