Blues 3, Penguins 2 (OT)
Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo scored the winning goal 4:07 into overtime as the visiting St. Louis Blues defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Wednesday.
Goalie Brian Elliott made 31 saves to improve to 8-1-0 on the season and the Blues held captain Sidney Crosby to no points and two shots on goal in the second game since his return from concussion symptoms.
In overtime, Vladimir Sobotka found a cutting Pietrangelo, who flipped the puck past Marc-Andre Fleury to give the Blues the victory.
Jamie Langenbrunner flipped in a rebound for his second goal of the season to give St. Louis a 2-1 lead with 9:15 remaining in regulation, but James Neal notched his 13th goal off a feed from Evgeni Malkin with 5:51 left to tie the game.
St. Louis, which lost in regulation for the first time in seven games Tuesday night, outshot the Penguins by a 13-4 margin in the first 20 minutes and seized the lead.
Scott Nichol intercepted Paul Martin's clearing pass and hammered a shot past Fleury at 5:33 for his first goal of the season.
The Blues appeared to extend the lead midway through the second period. However, after review, David Backes was ruled to have kicked the puck over the line at the left post.
Steve Sullivan tied the game for Pittsburgh 3:03 into the third period on the power play.
St. Louis power forward Chris Stewart returned from his three-game suspension for hitting Detroit defenseman Niklas Kronwall from behind into the boards and assisted on Langenbrunner’s goal.
