Rangers 6, Capitals 3
Ruslan Fedotenko scored twice and the New York Rangers erupted for four goals in the second period of a 6-3 victory over the host Washington Capitals on Friday afternoon.
Ryan Callahan had three assists while Daniel Girardi, Brad Richards and Artem Anisimov also enjoyed multi-point performances in the win.
Alex Ovechkin finally scored his first home goal of the season for the Capitals, who lost for just the second time in regulation in their own building.
The teams played a scoreless opening 20 minutes before the Rangers broke the game open in a wild second period. Marian Gaborik and Anisimov scored 3 1/2 minutes apart early in the period, and Fedotenko extended the advantage at 7:55 by converting a Marcus Johansson turnover from point-blank range.
Troy Brouwer and John Carlson scored to trim the deficit to a single goal by the 13-minute mark, but Brian Boyle made it 4-2 with 3:11 remaining after banging home a rebound of his initial shot that handcuffed Washington netminder Michal Neuvirth.
Richards added to the lead at 4:15, but Ovechkin answered less than two minutes later with his first goal in 11 home games to keep Washington in the hunt. The tally ended Ovechkin's seven-game goalless drought.
Fedotenko concluded the scoring at 11:40, capping his first multi-goal game since Feb. 21, 2009.
