Red Wings 4, Lightning 2

Tomas Holmstrom batted in a Nicklas Lidstrom pass on the power play 4:22 into the third period to break a tie and the Detroit Red Wings went on to defeat the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 on Wednesday for their sixth straight victory.

Pavel Datsyuk and Jonathan Ericsson each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings, who improved to 13-1-1 against Tampa Bay in Detroit. The Lightning, who finished 6-7 in November, have not beaten the Red Wings since January 2003 in Tampa.

Datsyuk and Ericsson – his first of the season – scored in the first period for the Wings, but Tampa Bay tied it in the second.

Marty St. Louis delivered on the power play at 9:35 and Steven Stamkos one-timed a nifty diagonal pass from defenseman Matt Gilroy to make it 2-2 at 19:46.

St. Louis has now scored against every other team in the league. He had not netted a goal in 15 games against Detroit before Wednesday.

Jimmy Howard made 21 saves for his sixth straight win. Howard is 3-0 against the Lightning.

Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman, the Lightning’s general manager, returned to Detroit for the first time as an opponent. Yzerman played 22 seasons with the Red Wings.
