Capitals 1, Jets 0
Alex Ovechkin's goal with 1:14 remaining provided the lone offense as the Washington Capitals defeated Winnipeg 1-0 on Thursday, ending the Jets' five-game home winning streak.
With the teams on the verge of overtime, Nicklas Backstrom forced a turnover in the neutral zone and the loose puck ended up on the stick of Marcus Johansson. He broke in and dropped a pass to Ovechkin, who wristed the puck between the legs of Winnipeg netminder Ondrej Pavelec.
Washington counterpart Michal Neuvirth turned aside 26 shots for his first shutout of the season as the Capitals won for the fourth time in the past six games.
The teams played to a scoreless duel over the first 40 minutes, with both netminders making a number of solid saves.
Neuvirth had a pair of point-blank stops barely four minutes into the game, getting his right pad on an Evander Kane one-timer before corralling a Bryan Little shot on the same offensive sequence.
Pavelec (27 saves) was equally stingy. His best save came with just under seven minutes left in the second period on a Brooks Laich shot that he rejected with his left pad after it changed direction on the way to the net.
