Avalanche 3, Blues 2

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 37 saves and the Colorado Avalanche won their record seventh straight game at home by posting a 3-2 triumph over the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday.

With his third consecutive win, Giguere improved to 7-4-0 on the season. His best save came late in the game when he gloved Alex Steen's slap shot on a 3-on-2 break.

The Avalanche seized a 3-2 lead with 5:53 remaining in the second period after Jay McClement was credited with a controversial goal after a pile-up in front. McClement's backhand was denied by defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, but the puck was ruled to have slid over the line.

After Colorado built a 2-0 lead on goals from Paul Stastny and Cody McLeod, the Blues responded with a pair of tallies in the middle session.

Captain David Backes scored at 3:01 with his 11th goal of the season. On a 2-on-1, he stopped short and fired a snapshot over Giguere’s glove. Just over six minutes later, Chris Stewart chipped the puck over the sprawling netminder for his fifth goal on the campaign.

The Blues’ 30th-ranked power play failed to create a lot of opportunities. St. Louis was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
