Sharks 2, Flames 1 (SO)

Michal Handzus and defenseman Brent Burns scored shootout goals to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 2-1 home victory over the Calgary Flames on Tuesday.

Torrey Mitchell tallied in regulation and Antti Niemi made 27 saves for San Jose, which improved to 8-1-1 in its last 10 home games and 11-2-4 in its last 17 overall.

Handzus gave the Sharks the edge in the second round of the shootout by beating Miikka Kiprusoff to the stick side with a wrist shot. After Mike Cammalleri fired the puck over the net on Calgary's second opportunity, Burns put a backhander past Kiprusoff to give San Jose its fifth win in six meetings with the Flames.

After a scoreless first period, Calgary got on the board with just under eight minutes remaining in the second when defenseman Chris Butler beat Niemi with a slap shot from the top of the left faceoff circle.

Mitchell forged a tie midway through the third as he backhanded the puck past Kiprusoff from the right side of the crease for his fifth goal of the season.

Justin Braun was denied the chance to be the hero when his goal at 3:55 of overtime was waved off. The referees ruled Tommy Wingels made contact with Kiprusoff, but replays showed the goaltender was knocked down by teammate Olli Jokinen.

Kiprusoff stopped 30 shots for the Flames, who have lost six straight on the road and seven of 10 overall. Calgary has lost eight of its last 10 visits to San Jose.
