Red Wings 3, Coyotes 2 (SO)
Todd Bertuzzi recorded his 299th career goal in the second period and scored the only goal in the shootout as the visiting Detroit Red Wings edged the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Thursday.
Bertuzzi spun around to beat goalie Mike Smith with a backhand in the shootout as the Red Wings won their fifth straight game and moved into the lead in the Central Division with a league-high 63 points.
Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen added two assists each for the Red Wings, who killed off a penalty in overtime to even their road record at 13-13. Detroit is now 4-0 in shootouts and 7-1 in extra time this season.
Kyle Chipchura had two assists for Phoenix, which killed all five Detroit power plays.
Raffi Torres scored the lone goal of the first period to give Phoenix the lead 2:23 in, stuffing a shot past goalie Jimmy Howard at the right post. Smith, who played Wednesday in Anaheim, stopped all 12 shots he faced in the opening 20 minutes.
Goals by Ian White and Bertuzzi gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead, but Gilbert Brule tied the game for the Coyotes at 14:08 of the second period. Brule notched his second in three games.
Coyotes forward Daymond Langkow left the game in the first period with an upper-body injury and did not return.
