Sharks 1, Flames 0

Benn Ferriero had the game's only goal and Antti Niemi turned aside 25 shots for his third shutout of the season as the San Jose Sharks blanked the host Calgary Flames 1-0 on Tuesday.

Niemi was especially solid over the final 20 minutes, making 14 saves to improve to 8-1-0 in nine career games against Calgary.

Ferriero broke a deadlock of nearly 52 minutes with his first goal in eight games, gloving a floating puck before setting it down and firing it past Flames netminder Miikka Kiprusoff.

Niemi kept Calgary at bay from there, stopping Alex Tanguary on a breakaway to highlight a handful of key saves in the final period. Calgary's final chance at converting the equalizer was snuffed out by a too-many-men penalty with 18 seconds left in regulation.

San Jose had the best chance to break the deadlock in the early going, but Kiprusoff gloved Joe Pavelski's shot from the slot early in the first period and stoned Logan Couture on an opportunity from in close later in the frame.

Pavelski nearly struck again midway through the third period, but his slap shot glanced off the post.
