Kings 3, Lightning 1

Kyle Clifford and Dustin Penner recorded second-period goals to break a tie and Jonathan Quick made 24 saves as the visiting Los Angeles Kings defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-1 on Tuesday.

Clifford scored his fourth goal on a breakaway after coming out of the penalty box at 10:16 to give the Kings a 2-1 lead. Penner popped in a rebound from the slot for his fifth goal with 2:14 remaining in the second as Los Angeles improved to 1-2 halfway through a six-game road trip.

Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 35th goal to tie the game 1-1 for the Lightning at 7:49 of the second period, finishing a 2-on-1 with former Kings forward Teddy Purcell. Stamkos, who turned 22 Tuesday, has at least one goal against every other NHL team.

Anze Kopitar scored on a deflection in the first period for the Kings, who improved to 15-0-1 when scoring at least three goals.

The Lightning, who had a 25-20 edge in shots, ended a five-game homestand 3-1-1 and lost in regulation for the first time in eight games. Tampa Bay was 0 for 3 on the power play and is six for its last 63.

Tampa Bay’s Marty St. Louis was held scoreless, ending a nine-game point streak.
