Jets 3, Capitals 2 (SO)

Evander Kane and defenseman Dustin Byfuglien scored 12 seconds apart to erase a two-goal deficit in the third period and Bryan Little netted the shootout winner to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 3-2 victory over the host Washington Capitals on Thursday.

With the Jets trailing 2-0 late in the third period, veteran defenseman Roman Hamrlik and Brooks Laich took penalties with just over four minutes remaining to give Winnipeg a 5-on-3 power play.

Kane banged in a rebound with the two-man advantage to cut the Washington lead to 2-1 with 2:15 remaining in the third.

Byfuglien unleashed a slap shot from center ice 12 seconds later that fooled Tomas Vokoun to tie the contest and force a shootout.

Captain Alex Ovechkin gave the Capitals the early lead in the shootout when he deked Ondrej Pavelec.

Blake Wheeler and Little responded with successful shootout tallies and Pavelec denied Alexander Semin and Mathieu Perreault to seal the win.

Ovechkin opened the scoring with a power play marker midway through the third period. Semin’s shot from the circle missed wide and bounced right to Ovechkin, who was lurking at the side of the net for his 23rd goal of the season.

Ovechkin returned the favor on another power play later in the period when he fed Semin with a cross-ice pass for his 14th goal of the season.
