Sabres 3, Stars 2 (SO)
Derek Roy scored with 39 seconds left in the third period and Nathan Gerbe converted in the fifth round of the shootout as the Buffalo Sabres rallied to a 3-2 home triumph over the Dallas Stars on Friday.
Thomas Vanek returned from a three-game absence due to an upper-body injury and netted his 20th goal of the campaign for Buffalo, which posted its fifth win in six contests (5-0-1).
After Roy cleaned up a rebound off defenseman Tyler Myers' shot to knot the contest at 2-2, the teams went to a shootout to decide the game.
Brad Boyes' wrist shot trickled past Kari Lehtonen in the first round and All-Star Jamie Benn answered with a snap shot past Ryan Miller in the second. The teams failed to score in the next two rounds before Gerbe's backhander caromed off the post and in off of Lehtonen in the fifth.
Michael Ryder, who netted his team-leading 20th goal of the season in the first period, saw his final attempt sail over the net to end the game.
Tomas Vincour also tallied in regulation for Dallas, which sits one point behind the eighth-place Phoenix Coyotes in the Western Conference standings.
