Capitals 3, Islanders 2 (OT)
CAPITALS 3, ISLANDERS 2 (OT): Captain Alex Ovechkin scored 1:35 into overtime as Washington capped a furious rally to win its fourth straight game.
Ovechkin unleashed a snap shot that sailed between the pads of Evgeni Nabokov for his 26th goal of the season. The goal was the Capitals’ third in just under five minutes.
With his team trailing by two goals, Troy Brouwer scored twice in the final 3:29 of regulation to force overtime.
Brouwer snapped the shutout when he finished a tip-in from the backdoor after a long pass by Mathieu Perreault. With an extra skater, Brouwer then redirected Brooks Laich's shot with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation to knot things at 2-2.
Josh Bailey and Matt Moulson scored for the Islanders, who had won the first two meetings this season.
Bailey scored his seventh of the season at 4:14 of the first period for the 1-0 lead with some nifty solo work. Bailey faked a slap shot from near the right faceoff circle, skated in the slot and faked another shot before using a backhand to beat Michal Neuvirth. It snapped a nine-game goalless drought for the 22-year-old center.
Moulson doubled the advantage just 2:16 into the third period. Steve Staios flicked a long shot on net amid traffic as Moulson managed to redirect the puck just enough for his team-leading 27th goal of the campaign.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Ovechkin has four points in his past three games. ... Bailey had sat out New York’s last two games with back spasms. ... PA Parenteau assisted on the second goal, giving him six points in four games. ... Nabokov finished with 31 saves.
