Oilers 2, Panthers 1 (SO)
OILERS 2, PANTHERS 1 (SO): Rookie Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored in the fourth round of the shootout as Edmonton edged Southeast Division-leading Florida to improve to 2-0-1 on its four-game road trip.
Ryan Jones tallied in regulation and Devan Dubnyk made 26 saves for the Oilers, who have earned at least one point in each of their last six overall games (4-0-2) and five straight on the road (3-0-2).
After Dubnyk denied Stephen Weiss on Florida's fourth attempt, Nugent-Hopkins raced in and lifted a backhander past Jose Theodore to end the Panthers' five-game home winning streak.
Jones opened the scoring 97 seconds into the second period with his 16th goal. Jordan Eberle made a cross-slot pass from the right faceoff circle during a 3-on-1 rush to Jones, who beat Theodore to the glove side for his second tally in three games.
Florida pulled even just 3:21 later as Jason Garrison took a backhand pass from the slot by Tomas Fleischmann and ripped the puck past Dubnyk from the left circle. The goal was Garrison's 16th, setting a franchise record for a defenseman previously shared by Jay Bouwmeester (twice) and Bryan McCabe.
Kris Versteeg nearly gave Florida the win in overtime, but he failed on a stuff attempt at the right post during a breakaway with five seconds remaining. Versteeg then poked the loose puck across the crease before it hit the left post and caromed away from the net.
Theodore turned aside 20 shots for the Panthers, who remained three points ahead of Washington in the Southeast and climbed within one of idle Boston for second place in the Eastern Conference.
