Blues 3, Coyotes 0

Blues 3, Coyotes 0: Rookie Jake Allen made 28 saves to earn his first career shutout as host St. Louis beat Phoenix for the second time in eight days.

Allen, who has started four of the last five games for the Blues, stopped eight shots in the first period and 10 in each of the final two sessions. The 22-year-old also was in net when St. Louis defeated the Coyotes 6-3 on the road last Thursday.

Chris Stewart tallied twice and added an assist, Alex Steen scored a goal and set up two others and captain David Backes notched a pair of assists. Stewart has recorded six goals and 12 points in his last six games.

After the Blues outshot Phoenix 16-8 in the first period, Stewart opened the scoring 5:54 into the second, when he one-timed a bounce off the end boards after a wide shot by Backes. Steen made it 2-0 just over four minutes into the third period, spinning and firing a loose puck in the high slot through traffic and past Mike Smith, who finished with 27 saves.

Stewart put away the game when his shot from the left faceoff dot sailed over Smith’s glove with 5:29 remaining.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Allen, drafted in the second round in 2008, has won four in a row and is 7-1-0 to start his NHL career. … Blues G Brian Elliott was a healthy scratch and hasn’t played in five games. … The Coyotes have been shut out three times this season - all on the road, where they have scored 22 goals in 11 contests.
