Kings 2, Hurricanes 1 (SO)

Jeff Carter scored in the second round of the shootout to lift visiting Los Angeles over Carolina

Dwight King scored an unassisted short-handed goal and Jonathan Quick made 27 saves for the Kings in the opener of a four-game road trip. Quick also turned aside all three shots in the shootout, clinching the win when he gloved Nathan Gerbe's tying attempt.

Jeff Skinner scored a power-play goal and Cam Ward made 36 saves for the Hurricanes, who converted on only 1-of-5 chances with the man advantage. Carter had the game-winner for the Kings in overtime in Wednesday's 4-3 win over Ottawa.

King broke the scoreless deadlock with the Hurricanes on the power play with 6:34 left in the third period, capitalizing when defenseman Justin Faulk overskated the puck in the neutral zone before tucking a backhander past Ward.

The lead was short-lived as Skinner converted on the power play 40 seconds later, knocking home a rebound of defenseman Andrej Sekera's shot from the point past Quick for his first goal of the season.
