Flames 4, Panthers 3 (SO)
Rookie Sean Monahan scored in the sixth round of the shootout as Calgary overcame a late collapse to edge visiting Florida.
After storming back from a 3-1 third-period deficit on goals by Jimmy Hayes and Marcel Goc, the Panthers stayed alive twice in the sudden-death format on goals from Brad Boyes and Tomas Fleischmann. They weren't as fortunate in round six, as Monahan beat Tim Thomas and Reto Berra stopped Hayes as the Flames earned their first home win over Florida since Jan. 4, 2007.
Joe Colborne, Sven Baertschi and Blair Jones scored in regulation for the Flames, who have points in three straight (2-0-1). Tom Gilbert replied for the Panthers, who finished 2-2-1 on their five-game Western Conference trek.
Gilbert put Florida on the board with his first of the season with 4:46 remaining in the first period. After Nick Bjugstad won a faceoff in the Calgary zone, the puck made its way back to Gilbert, who fluttered a shot from the point that beat Berra between the pads.
Colborne evened the game nine minutes into the middle period with a quick wrist shot from the edge of the right circle and Baertschi put the Flames ahead on a power play at 12:04, banging home a long rebound of a T.J. Brodie point shot. Jones provided some insurance at 5:40 of the third - converting a Lance Bouma pass for his first of the season - but it wasn't enough.
