Captain Eric Staal had a goal and two assists to lead host Carolina to its first win in five games.

Patrick Dwyer, Tuomo Ruutu and fifth overall pick Elias Lindholm scored in a 5:53 span in the second period for the Hurricanes. Cam Ward, who also started on Saturday night in Boston, made 35 saves for his first victory in three starts since returning from injury.

Captain Jason Spezza had the lone goal for Ottawa, which has lost four of its last five contests. Robin Lehner stopped 33 shots after also starting Saturday in Detroit.

Spezza opened the scoring 67 seconds into the contest, but Dwyer answered 3:10 into the second. Ruutu gave Carolina the lead on a rush with Staal 2:59 later and Lindholm made it 3-1 by cutting to the net on a power play and firing a wrist shot past Lehner.

Ward made several important saves throughout the game - including an incredible stop after batting a shot by Colin Greening with his stick while diving across the crease. Staal added an empty-net goal with 2:23 remaining in the third period to seal the victory.
