Defenseman Mark Stuart scored his first goal of the season to spark a three-goal second period and Al Montoya made 28 saves as Winnipeg improved to 2-0-0 on its six-game road trip.
Captain Andrew Ladd and Devin Setoguchi also scored for Winnipeg, which held on after building a 3-0 advantage to improve to 6-2-2 in its last 10 overall contests.
Captain John Tavares recorded a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who lost for the ninth time in 11 games. Kevin Poulin finished with 26 saves but allowed three goals in a span of five shots in the middle session.
Stuart opened the scoring 11:27 into the second with a slap shot that beat Poulin to the glove side. Ladd scored his seventh of the season with 5:21 left in the period and Setoguchi tipped in a shot for his sixth goal 2:03 later.
The Islanders took advantage of a power-play opportunity 65 seconds afterward, with defenseman Andrew MacDonald scoring his second of the season to bring New York within 3-1. Tavares slid his team-leading 11th goal between Montoya’s pads with six minutes remaining in the third to cut the deficit to one, but the Islanders could not cash in during a man advantage with five minutes left.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Setoguchi has scored in both games of the road trip after an eight-game goalless drought. … The Jets, who are playing their first season in the Western Conference, improved to 6-1-0 against the East. … MacDonald’s goal snapped a streak of 16 consecutive power plays without a goal for the Islanders.
