Maple Leafs 3, Stars 2 (OT)

Trevor Smith redirected a point shot by defenseman Jake Gardiner 4:18 into overtime and Jonathan Bernier made 48 saves as host Toronto snapped a five-game winless streak.

Nazem Kadri scored twice in his return to the lineup for the Maple Leafs, who received 15 saves from Bernier in the first and third periods, 12 in the second and six in overtime. Phil Kessel added two assists to extend his point streak to five games.

Erik Cole and Shawn Horcoff scored for Dallas, which is 7-1-1 in its last nine road games. Kari Lehtonen stopped 21 shots to fall to 2-6-2 in his career against Toronto.

Kadri earned a spot on the top line with Kessel and James van Riemsdyk and the move paid off 58 seconds into the second period when he finished a nice passing play by firing a shot from the slot past Lehtonen. He added another on a power play 6:58 into the third after van Riemsdyk drew a penalty on Dallas defenseman Alex Goligoski.

Horcoff had a goal taken off the scoreboard midway through the third after officials ruled his stick made contact with the puck above the crossbar. He tipped another puck past Bernier on a power play with 2:46 remaining in the session and this time it was deemed legal, sending the contest to overtime.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Maple Leafs RW Jerry D’Amigo made his NHL debut, registering one shot in 4:02 of ice time. … Stars D Trevor Daley appeared to hurt his leg on the play that led to Kadri’s first goal and left the game. Dallas already lost D Stephane Robidas for the balance of the season due to a broken leg. … Kadri missed Tuesday’s game due to the death of his grandfather.
